An advertised price is an offer, not a receipt.
Marketplace listings describe what a seller asks at a moment in time. A transaction price describes a completed sale, but even it may omit taxes, registration, financing costs, trade-in value, optional products, or fees. CarGlitch keeps these measures named and separate.
02 / STANDARDIZE
Compare like with like—only as far as the fields allow.
Standardization organizes observations around known attributes such as model year, trim, drivetrain, powertrain, mileage, location, and timing. It may adjust for measured differences so that a mixed set of observations is more comparable.
It cannot recover an unrecorded option, hidden damage, maintenance quality, negotiation, or seller motivation. Configuration matching stops at the boundary of supplied evidence; it does not silently promote a near match into an exact one.
03 / UNCERTAINTY
A range is part of the answer.
A point estimate is a convenient center, not a guaranteed purchase price or vehicle value. An interval communicates plausible variation under the presentation method. Wider intervals, thinner samples, older observations, or incomplete configurations should lower confidence.

04 / RELIABILITY
A fleet signal is not a diagnosis—or a cause.
Repair datasets reflect their collection channels. Warranty claims miss out-of-warranty and do-it-yourself work. Shop records miss nonparticipating shops. Owner reports can be selective. Recalls describe identified safety defects, not every repair a vehicle may need.
A fleet-level association may help frame questions, but it cannot establish that a feature caused a failure or predict the future of one vehicle. Usage, maintenance, climate, configuration, reporting, and prior damage can all confound a pattern.
05 / MISSING
Unavailable is an honest result.
Missing data can be informative about coverage, but it is not evidence of zero repairs, no defects, a typical price, or an unchanged configuration. Filling gaps with a precise-looking default would hide the difference between observation and assumption.
When required provenance, dates, citations, or observations are absent, the presentation remains unavailable or unverified. CarGlitch does not upgrade missing provenance into a “current” badge.

Estimates can narrow a search and reveal where more inspection is warranted. They do not replace a vehicle-history review, independent mechanical inspection, itemized out-the-door quote, recall check, or professional advice.
